Last year I had the pleasure of being a fashion contributor for the Seniorologie Blog, an educational blog for senior photographers.

Earlier this year, I had the chance to travel to Nashville for a Seniorologie Shootout where I got the chance to meet Leslie Kerrigan, the woman behind it all and her partner in planning crime, Courtney DeLaura. At that event they announced Conference 12. Admittedly, I did not jump on the chance to register, but as the date drew closer, the lure of the desert grew stronger and as did my desire to check off “Do a Photoshoot in the Desert” from my photography bucket list.

Being a photographer, actually MAKING photos, is a VERY little part of what we do. The bulk of the time, I’m sitting in my home office, with my dogs at my feet, editing or blogging, or doing one of a million other things that are required to run Slice of Lime.  So the opportunity to be in a cocoon of creativity with a bunch of other #girlbosses in the desert at a kick ass hotel…I just couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to learn from some big names in the senior photography world.

Upon arriving, it felt like I was meeting up with family. Several of the photographer friends I had made in Nashville were also attending, so getting to see them again and connect was nothing short of awesome. Each of the 12 speakers brought their heart to each of their presentations and further, they made themselves available and engaged with all of us throughout the conference. When you meet photographers who are well known in the photographer community there’s always a moment where you question whether the way the come across online, is going to be how they are in “real life”…and I can honestly say, every one of the speakers at conference12 were as friendly and warm and authentic in person as they come across online.

Each day was filled with education and then shooting. As scheduled as our days were, I wanted to keep going and wish we could’ve shot ALL day hahahahaha. If you have a chance to attend conference12 next year, jump on it friends, because it really was as awesome an experience as you’ve read all the attendees raving about it for the last many weeks since we’ve been home. New friends were made and I look forward to seeing many of them again in May when we meet up in Austin, Texas for the Artful Chaos workshop with the one and only Spanki Mills.  In the meantime, below are some of my faves from the styled shoots I had the pleasure of shooting.

We stayed at The Saguaro in Scottsdale, Arizona. As you can see, there was no shortage of color. Everywhere you turned from the lobby to your room, color smacked you across the face. :)

The first shoots I got to participate in were styled by the fabulous Misti Davis of Pink Fly Photography. This was something so different from anything I have ever shot and the retro vibe was just super cute!!

The next shoot I got to participate in was styled by  True Moua of True Moua Photography. True has become known in the senior photography industry for her ethereal, whimsical, out of this world styled shoots. Just go to her site to see. Seriously cool stuff! Getting to learn from her was one of the highlights of the conference. She was so humble and kind and just so open with her knowledge. I loved every minute. Her “Desert Rose” themed desert shoot was hands down one of my faves…because that succulent crown and hello? DESERT!!!

Jared was the LONE guy at Conference 12 and he held his own. :)  Jared was incredibly sweet and kind and shared with all of the ins and out of getting started with off-camera lighting. The vibrant colors in this styled shoot were just WOW! I love me some Frida. All that was missing was Frida’s Casa Azul.
